FAQs
What does humor have to do with compensation?
No doubt you will find a good smattering of humor on this website.  I
make no apologies for that.  I want you to know how I think.  And
humor provides a glimpse into the way one thinks.  Good humor flows
from keen observation.  Keen observation flows from an ability to
analyze in a creative way.  And the ability to analyze in a creative way
is at the heart of compensation.  There are many who see
compensation as nothing but numbers and data, and consider it to be
a royal bore.  I think nothing could be further from the truth.  I see
the compensation space as ripe with opportunities to blend real
analysis with real creativity.   If you do it well, the very process of
crunching the numbers is a very creative process and can be very
enlightening.  Of course, there is a time and a place for humor and I’
m know the board meeting is no place to go for the yucks.

What’s the point of the Off White Papers?
Sometimes it is important to look at things from a different angle.
While much is being written about compensation trends, I decided to
inject a bit of lighthearted fun into topics that are almost always
treated with dead seriousness.  Each paper is designed to get you to
think about the content in a new way and have some fun doing it.
Much of compensation today is threatened by two fatal flaws:  1)
meaningless cliché and 2) enslavement to the latest fads.  Even the
term “thinking outside the box” has become sort of cliché.  But it is
my hope that you will come to the conclusion, that maybe, just
maybe, here’s a guy who can help us look at things from a different
angle.

How much do you charge?
My rates vary depending on the individual project.  At the end of the
day, I trust you will find that I provide excellent value at very
reasonable rates.

Why should I use you?
All kidding aside, I can provide you with:
  • Exceptional modeling capability for cost effective decision
    making
  • Data driven rationale for program evaluation and design
  • Effective communication planning and implementation
  • Independent, objective, informed and thoughtful compensation
    leadership
  • An appreciation for the importance role of execution in
    program success

Where do you get your ideas for the cartoons?
I can’t tell you how often I get this question.  Ideas come to me in
many ways.  Occasionally, I’ll be in a meeting and the idea suddenly
comes to mind.  (Note this has never ever happened in a compensation
committee meeting.)  Other times an idea just comes out of nowhere.
At other times, I sit down with pad an paper with Baroque music
playing and work at it.  Sometimes I think of the gag line first, other
times I start with a picture.  At times, ideas can flow fast and furious
and at other times, nothin’, nada, zilch.  While I enjoy reading the
cartoons by others from time to time, I never use the work of others to
stimulate my ideas.  I want it to be my own work.  I’ve learned to
discipline myself to capture the ideas and write them down when they
come.  If I don’t, a great idea can be lost forever in the recesses of my
brain.  Discipline and creativity go hand in hand and that carries over
to compensation work as well.
